Dr. Saif M. Al-Ghais received his B.Sc. degree from Seattle Pacific University, USA and Ph.D. in Marine Biology (1991) from the University of Liverpool, UK. Over the last two decades, he has been actively involved in the research on marine environment conservation and protection, particularly in the field of environmental pollution and toxicology, focusing on the impact of marine pollution on fishes, turtles, dugong and mangrove. He has over 35 research publications in national and international reviewed scientific journals and books. In addition, he has been contributing his scientific knowledge and expertise to a number of local newspapers, magazines and audio-video media, including a number of educational films. He is a member of over 10 professional international societies. He has been involved in the post-graduate teaching and supervision of the thesis work of M.Sc. students registered in the UAEU and international University. Also worked closely with the IUCN, CMS, WWF, IFAW and CITES and prepared many reports assessing wildlife, environmental conservation, pollution and management issues. He performed as Vice-Chairman of the IUCN Marine Turtles Specialist Group, responsible for marine turtle conservation in the Western Indian Ocean. In September 1996, he was deputed by the UAE University to take over an additional charge of setting up the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (presently Abu Dhabi Environmental Authority) in Abu Dhabi, which he was heading as the Secretary General till 2001. He is also holding the post of Adjunct Professor in the Western Washington University, USA. Recently, he held mutual cooperation with the NASA’s Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California, where he had an opportunity to discuss and plan joint research projects of mutual interest related to environmental issues. Presently, in addition to his profession as an Associate Professor at the Biology Department he holds the post of Executive Director for Environmental Protection and Development Authority, Government of Ras Al Khaima since 2007.
