Professor Linda J. Bilmes is Daniel Patrick Moynihan Senior Lecturer in Public Policy. Her research focuses on US budgeting and public administration, particularly on the costs of war, veterans' affairs, the civil service and municipal finance. She is a full-time Harvard faculty member, teaching budgeting, cost accounting and public finance, and teaching the workshops for newly-elected Mayors and Members of Congress. She also leads an Applied Field Lab program to assist local communities in public finance and operations, using teams of student volunteers. Through this program, hundreds of HKS students are trained to become the next generation of city leaders by working on assignments for local mayors, city managers and department heads in the Greater Boston area, including in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Newton and coastal communities of Massachusetts. Bilmes served as Assistant Secretary and Chief Financial Officer of the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Clinton. She currently serves as a Presidential appointee on the US National Park System Advisory Board and the US Department of Labor Veterans Employment and Training Advisory Board as well as on several private and non-profit boards of directors.
